As the nation begins to find its way back to normal following the pandemic, the U.S. government and corporations need to work harder to earn consumer trust over how personal data is collected and stored, Microsoft’s top privacy lawyer said in a blog post on the company’s website on Friday.

Julie Brill, deputy general counsel and chief privacy officer in Redmond, Washington, wrote that the key to recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic lies in using personal information to track the spread of the virus and allow people to return to the office. That will not be possible until the U.S. takes a serious look at comprehensive data legislation and corporations stop trying to lobby politicians to water down those laws, she wrote.
