While many general counsel shifted focus to COVID-19 and the vast changes that it brought to the workplace in 2020, this year will see a continued focus on the importance of data use and data sharing to business operations, new and changing privacy laws and enforcement, and the proliferation and devastation of cyberattacks on already vulnerable workforces. General counsel’s attention to data privacy- and security-related issues will be at the forefront in 2021. A great deal of focus will continue around the requirements contained in the California Consumer Privacy Act, which was enhanced by the California Privacy Rights Act, or the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation.
