Justin Ergler, director of alternative fee intelligence and analytics at GlaxoSmithKline in Raleigh, North Carolina, said GlaxoSmithKline has moved away from the billable hour, and is now in flat-fee arrangements with its outside counsel. However, that change took the better part of a decade to achieve.

“Change, even with great ideas, is oftentimes resisted until the very last second, until you have to change,” Ergler said.
