Kevin Meek was happy as a law firm partner, working largely in corporate restructuring, when Ka-POW! Z2 Comics, a client, approached him with an offer to serve as their general counsel and chief financial officer. He said it was an opportunity he could not pass up. Z2 Comics combines graphic novels with music; Meek would combine the roles of GC and CFO.

Meek’s expansion of the general counsel role beyond the legal department  is part of a continuing trend of GCs who have taken on additional responsibilities. Over the past year, GCs have been made chief operating officers, chief administrative officers, and chief executive officers. However, it is rare that GCs have been tapped to become their company’s financial chiefs.
