As general counsel are becoming more responsible for overseeing corporate ESG efforts, they are also concerned with educating and training their boards on those emerging issues, according to data published by research and advisory company Gartner on Friday.

Pulled from a survey of 83 general counsel, the respondents indicated their top corporate governance goals for 2021 include environmental, social and governance, board education and director training. Drew Tanenbaum, a director in Gartner’s legal and compliance advisory practice in Baltimore, said part of the board training and education is advising on the continued importance of ESG. That includes, according to the report, skills surrounding sustainability and diversity and inclusion.
