Hard questions are ahead for lawmakers and lawyers in the telecommunications industry, experts say, and the potential answers are top-of-mind for tech companies’ in-house lawyers.

Recent controversy over secretive telecommunications subpoenas—in which the Department of Justice sought indefinite nondisclosure orders that prevent individuals under investigation from discovering when their records and data have been shared with law enforcement—have caused some congressional leaders to call on U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to address the issue. Apple came face-to-face with such information requests, which surfaced to the public in news reports earlier this month.
