The next big step in the evolution of corporate legal departments will likely hinge on in-house leaders collaborating more with chief financial officers and outside firms that can help companies make more calculated business decisions about litigation. 

The change is already underway, though legal departments at many companies have yet to fully embrace a commercial mindset and operate more like financial departments with an increased focus on generating revenue by pursuing litigation.
