General counsel want their outside law firms to check in more often and seek feedback. They want their lawyers to ask, “How are we doing?” And they want to be able to have candid talks about expectations and performance. 

But corporate counsel and legal operations leaders shouldn’t sit around and wait for law firms to take the lead on relationship building. They can step up and take action to have meaningful conversations with their outside counsel.
