In one week this month, three iconic companies announced plans to break themselves apart. General Electric and Toshiba each plans to separate into three companies, while Johnson & Johnson plans to divide into two.

Take note, corporate legal departments. M&A attorneys say many more companies are likely to announce similar deals in the coming months—launching processes that can take as long as two years and require the integral involvement of legal departments every step of the way.
