From the sudden exit of the Coca-Cola Co.'s general counsel to PayPal Holdings Inc.'s top lawyer joining the Great Resignation and the Ford Motor Co.'s appointment of a new legal chief, the past year has seen a number of noteworthy shake-ups at the upper echelons of corporate legal departments.

The most talked about GC departure of the year occurred in April, when Coca-Cola revealed that Bradley Gayton had resigned after eight months on the job for the Atlanta-based beverage giant. Shortly before he hung up his top lawyer hat, Gayton had made a splash by introducing stringent diversity guidelines for the company's outside counsel.

His initiative, which was widely publicized and generated some backlash, would have required Coca-Cola's outside law firms to staff the company's matters with legal teams that were at least 30% diverse, and at least 15% of those diverse lawyers had to be Black. Firms that failed to meet the requirements risked having their fees slashed or, ultimately, losing Coca-Cola's business.
