James Jorgensen, who earlier served as the University of Iowa's deputy GC, is returning as vice president for legal affairs and general counsel.

Jorgensen succeeds Carroll Reasoner, who is retiring after serving in the role for 13 years, a span when she advised three presidents.

Jorgensen is scheduled to begin his new role on Sept. 30. He served as the university's associate counsel and deputy general counsel from 2006 through 2018.

Jorgensen currently serves as senior counsel at Husch Blackwell in Denver. He's been there since 2021, when he ended a nearly three-year run as chief of staff and chief legal counsel for Pitzer College in Claremont, California.

UI President Barbara Wilson said Jorgensen's background, expertise, and skills are ideal for this leadership position as the university works to achieve the ambitious goals in its new strategic plan.

Jorgensen will receive an annual salary of $385,000. His appointment requires approval by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.
