Houston-based Coterra Energy Inc. has promoted assistant general counsel Adam Vela to succeed senior vice president and general counsel Francis Barron, who is set to retire in the first quarter of 2023.

Barron took the legal reins of the oil-and-gas exploration and production company after it formed last year through the merger of Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. and Cimarex Energy Co. Barron, who had been the Cimarex legal chief since 2013, will transition out of his current role Sept. 30.

Before the merger, Vela had been with Cimarex for 17 years, with primary responsibility for litigation and advising business units on legal matters related to operations, leasing, royalties, safety and other matters.

Prior to Cimarex, Vela was an attorney at Phoenix-based Snell & Wilmer, Denver-based Hoffman Reilly Pozner & Williamson and with McKenna Long & Aldridge in Washington, D.C.

The merger of Cabot and Cimarex, completed in October, created a company with 936 employees, $1.9 billion in annual revenue and a stock market value of $23 billion.
