Torres succeeds Amy Keating, who departed San Francisco-based Mozilla in July 2021 to become chief legal officer at the satellite network Planet.

Mozilla is a taxable subsidiary of the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation, which is dedicated to ensuring the internet is a global public resource, open and accessible to all.

"Mozilla continues to be a unique and respected voice in technology, in a world that needs trusted institutions more than ever. There is no other organization that combines community, product, technology and advocacy to produce trusted innovative products that people love," Torres said in a statement.

Torres joins Mozilla with two decades of legal experience, most recently at network security company Flashbots, where he led the company's legal and strategic initiatives.

In his new role at Mozilla, Torres will lead Mozilla's global legal and public policy teams as well as develop legal, regulatory and policy strategies that support Mozilla's mission.

Prior to Flashbots, Torres was general counsel for two startups and spent more than a decade at customer relationship management company Salesforce, where he rose to associate general counsel and later VP of business development and strategic alliances.

He started his legal career at San Francisco-based law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe.
