The growth company law practice modCounsel has appointed Ronak Ray, senior vice president, secretary and general counsel at Pantheon Systems Inc., as executive managing director of its global law and consulting practice. Below, Ray talks to Corporate Counsel on why he has taken on this additional role, his passion around the need for innovation in client service delivery and integrated law services, and how to walk the walk when it comes to moving the diversity, equity and inclusion needle.
Corporate Counsel: You have been an adviser of modCounsel since its inception, what made you decide to take on a larger role in the company?
Ronak Ray: modCounsel presents an opportunity to support a strong mission with a set of offerings that can bring real value to its customers. I have spent my entire career inside of companies and now have the unique position of shaping the value proposition for all market participants, including the in-house legal team. With modCounsel I had the opportunity to work with three incredibly talented co-founders who shared this vision and were each willing to stake their careers to make it come to life. The team has now reached a critical mass where I could no longer stand by and watch them have all the fun.

The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
