Leaders of 41 legal departments announced on Tuesday that they have boosted diversity efforts enough to receive Mansfield Rule 2.0 certification this year.

The Diversity Lab, an incubator that fosters innovation that boosts inclusion in law, launched the Mansfield Rule in 2017 for law firms and expanded it to legal departments in 2019. It is named for Arabella Mansfield, who became the first female lawyer in the U.S. in 1869.

Rather than using diversity quotas, Mansfield certification focuses on increasing the diversity of lawyers considered for jobs. Legal departments had to consider at least 50% underrepresented talent for appointments and promotions to senior leadership roles, internal high-visibility career development opportunities, open lateral positions, and outside counsel lead roles. They also ensured that their internal advancement processes are transparent and accessible to all of their lawyers.
