The Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday charged McDonald’s with public disclosure violations related to its 2019 firing of CEO Stephen Easterbrook for having an inappropriate relationship with an employee.

The company was able to settle the matter without paying a financial penalty. However, the enforcement action should send a strong signal to company legal departments about the importance of handling CEO dismissals with transparency, an ethics expert said.
