Enviva Inc., a big but little-known player in the clean energy game, is losing its general counsel, Bill Schmidt, who will be succeeded by longtime deputy, Jason Paral.

The 19-year-old company is the world’s largest producer of industrial wood pellets, which energy companies and other customers use to replace coal and other fossil fuels. Based in Bethesda, Maryland, the company has 10 plants, 1,200 employees and more than $1 billion in annual revenue.
