In a recent keynote at the GLL Members Forum, Dr. Azeem Ibrahim OBE and Tony West, Chief Legal Officer at Uber, discussed the emerging post-liberal global order and how to prevent it. They explored why, in the second decade of the 21st century, the idea of liberal democracy is starkly at risk and how to prepare for the near future. In the Q&A below, they predict how global power will be reconfigured and discuss the biggest risks on the horizon that businesses should be preparing for. They also explore why authoritarianism is on the rise and outline how businesses, particularly general counsel, can help to preserve democracy.
Corporate Counsel Advance: The theme of the GLL Members Forum was 'Leaders of Our Own Legacy,' how would you define success?
Dr. Azeem Ibrahim OBE: Personally, success is found in moving the dial on important issues in the right direction. In leadership, success is making those decisions which, in as objective ways as are possible to assess, truly affect others positively. Notice I did not say change, as change is not the domain of one individual. We all need to make our very small contribution in furthering the arguments.
