Heritage Foundation Chief Legal Officer Chris Byrnes will depart the conservative think tank in September to launch the Washington, D.C., office of New York-based Nelson Madden Black, a boutique firm specializing in religious organizations.

Byrnes joined the Heritage Foundation in 2016 as assistant general counsel and became the top lawyer in 2018. Before then, he was associate general counsel at Strayer University. He also spent time with the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and the U.S. Department of Education, after getting his law degree from Georgetown.
