If there had been a technology transfer (TT) industry in existence and a team in place at the University of Florida (UF) back in the mid-1960s when Professor Robert Cade invented Gatorade®, UF could have avoided paying millions in outside legal fees and costs.

Because there was nothing resembling a TT position, team, or industry at that time, the (short version of the) story goes that after Professor Cade and his team invented the drink, he went to UF's leadership to ask what they thought of it and whether the university wanted to retain the rights to the invention (as is now the presumption under most educational invention policies in the U.S.) or if the university would be willing to waive the rights.
