JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s top consumer-banking lawyer, Stephen Simcock, is leaving the financial giant to become general counsel of fintech star SoFi Technologies.

San Francisco-based SoFi announced the hiring Monday, saying he will succeed Rob Lavet, who is retiring after serving as general counsel since 2012, one year after SoFi's founding. Lavet's 45-year legal career included a 16-year stint at Sallie Mae, where he rose to general counsel.
