A federal judge on Monday ordered Google to open its Play Store to competitors for three years, a harsh setback for the tech giant stemming from a jury finding in December 2023 that the company had for years illegally wielded monopoly power over Android app distribution and in-app payments.

Judge James Donato of the Northern District of California said his remedy for Google abusing its market power would level the playing field for rivals "without burdening Google excessively."
