Kevin Colby is a busy man. As the only in-house lawyer at global energy technology company GOWell International Inc. he has to be flexible. “Sometimes, I have meetings at 7 a.m. and other meetings at 9:30 p.m. It depends on what has to be done,” he said. "For what I'm doing, there's no way this would be a 9-to-5 job. For a GC, you've just got to do what you've got to do.”

Colby, winner of Corporate Counsel's 2024 Solo GC of the Year Award, has been a one-man legal department for more than a decade, since joining GOWell from Camara & Sibley, a boutique firm in Houston. But the company, which was founded in China before expanding to open research and development centers in Houston and Dubai, originally had a very different approach to doing legal work.
