Even for global automaker General Motors, structuring a $650 milion investment in an outside company isn't a routine, shift-on-the-fly maneuver.
Now imagine that investment is in a lithium mining company, in the process of splitting into two separate entities. Meanwhile, other automakers betting their futures on electric vehicles are salivating over this same, largest-known lithium deposit in the United States and are preparing competing bids.
