The Recording Industry Association of America has just lost to the bench the outside lawyer who spearheaded its huge enforcement effort cracking down on consumers who download music illegally. In June, Richard Gabriel was sworn in as a judge on the Colorado Court of Appeals, leaving Denver-based law firm Holme Roberts & Owen.

Since 2006, Gabriel had represented the RIAA in court as lead attorney in numerous high-profile cases. Holme Roberts says that partner Timothy Reynolds, who has worked with Gabriel, has stepped up as lead attorney. The other attorneys at the firm on the RIAA business?Donald Kelso, Katheryn Coggon, and Eve Burton?will also continue. The firm uses three teams to manage the prodigious flow of cases: one each for investigation, settlements, and litigation.
