Universities love striking it rich with the invention of a blockbuster drug. But they also like the option of diversifying their assets by selling off the royalties from their invention. In December, Northwestern University pulled off the largest monetization ever of a royalty stream for a pharmaceutical product, auctioning a portion of its worldwide royalty interest in Lyrica for $700 million to New York?based Royalty Pharma.
