It’s not every day a client asks his attorney to crawl under the conference table with him during a meeting and hang out there for a while. But nine years ago, when patent lawyer Terry Stalford first met with client CDX Gas, LLC, a natural gas exploration and production company that specializes in extracting methane from coal beds, that’s exactly what founder Monty Rial asked him to do.
“He was trying to explain how hard it is to stay in a coal seam and how thin these coal seams were, just a couple of feet thick,” Stalford says with a laugh. “I guess he thought I wasn’t getting it. . . . He was driven to make me understand his technology and its applications.”
