An array of leading general counsel gathered in Westminster last month for the Pure Recruitment annual dinner, held in association with Legal Week. Senior in-house lawyers mingled with finance directors for the black-tie event, which featured a speech from the former Chancellor Lord Lawson.

Unsurprisingly, the state of the economy took center stage in many of the discussions, not least because of the presence of Lawson, who attacked the tripartite system of banking regulation that was established by then-Chancellor Gordon Brown soon after Labour swept into power in 1997.
