Intellectual property assets often contain untapped value. I say this not because I am an IP lawyer, but instead as a business person who has, over the past 21 years of law practice, seen dozens of businesses nurture their IP in a way that yields long-term revenue and provides exit opportunities beyond even the wildest dreams of the founders.
But does the current economic downturn mean that these opportunities have disappeared? To the contrary, the smart and strategic IP owner sees any recession — even one as severe as this one — as an opportunity to make strides against competitors that will position a company well when things turn around. Depression-era lessons work well in safeguarding and maximizing IP portfolio value, especially in a downturn.
