FMC Technologies’ search for a new roster of tech-savvy, budget-conscious outside counsel is almost over. The Houston-based oil and gas equipment company has selected 16 firms to take part in the final phase of what it calls the 1st Law Litigation Value Challenge.

The company hasn’t relied on the usual RFP process, though. As we previously reported, the company decided to try a new approach. In May, FMC posted a two-page questionnaire on Legal OnRamp, a social networking Web site for lawyers, and put out a call for help. The company also opened a discussion board on the site so hopefuls could ask questions and share thoughts. About 50 firms filled out and submitted the questionnaire.
