Taking an in-house legal job never appealed to Brett Hart. But then he started handling litigation for the Sara Lee Corporation while working in private practice. Now Hart finds himself the new general counsel for the Downers Grove, Illinois–based food giant, whose brands generate more than $12 billion in annual sales. He replaces Peggy Foran, who left Sara Lee for personal reasons in June.

Hart isn’t completely new to Sara Lee’s in-house group. He joined the company in 2003 as an associate general counsel. He had already worked on Sara Lee’s litigation matters as a partner at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal in Chicago, so he says the transition just made sense. He probably wouldn’t have left private practice to work for another company. “I knew it to be a much larger and more complex company than most people realize,” Hart says. “I knew that it would present an enormous opportunity for growth for me, and I knew the work would be interesting as well.”
