The program is still a work in progress. The lawyers at United Technologies are happy to experiment when necessary. “We’re not wedded to one model,” Beach says. “We are constantly learning. We just adjust and modify as we go along.”
Some of the arrangements are for a specific case portfolio. United Technologies has about 3,000 asbestos-related claims all across the country. For the last three years, Cleveland-based Tucker Ellis & West has handled virtually all of those for a flat fee.
