News Corporation apparently didn’t think that a second trial against the marketing company Valassis Communications Inc. was going to go much better than the first.

Over the weekend, just days before Valassis was to begin arguing in Detroit federal district court that a division of News Corporation engaged in anti-competitive behavior, the two sides agreed on a settlement that includes a $500 million payment from News Corporation.
