Growing up, Stephen Clark was often toted around to various museums. He enjoyed the cultural trips with his family, but he says he never imagined he’d end up helping to run one of the largest art institutions in the world. In 2008 Clark, 50, became the general counsel and vice president of the J. Paul Getty Trust, which operates a museum and visual arts research and conservation institutes, as well as a foundation that provides grants to artists. When it comes to his legal career in the arts, Clark says he was “just lucky.” A native of upstate New York, Clark moved to New York City after graduating from Hamilton College in 1981 with a B.A. in history. He landed his first job at the Museum of Modern Art as an information officer and proceeded to rise up the art management ranks. In 1985 he jumped over to the American Craft Museum for an assistant director position.

But Clark says he’d always contemplated law school, and in 1987 he finally took the plunge, enrolling in Fordham University Law School. “I didn’t know for sure that I’d head back to the arts after school,” says Clark. “But a museum is such a dynamic and interesting place to work, it’s hard to pass up a job when it comes your way.”
