Thomas Sabatino Jr. is flying high after walking away with a lucrative severance package from his former employer. He’s been named the new general counsel for UAL Corporation, the holding company of United Airlines. He’ll start his new job on March 29, and report to CEO Glenn Tilton.

It’s a big change for Sabatino, 51, who could not be reached for comment. He’s spent much of his legal career in the pharmaceutical industry. Before signing up with Chicago-based United, he was general counsel for the drug maker Schering-Plough. He oversaw its global law department until November 2009, when Merck & Co., Inc. officially bought the company for $41.1 billion.
