The four employees of Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto Group on trial in China for bribery and infringement of trade secrets admitted Monday to taking bribes from Chinese businesses.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Australian citizen Stern Hu, the former head of the China sales team for Rio Tinto, testified Monday, on the first day of a three-day trial, that he accepted bribes from two Chinese steel mills that wanted to ensure their access to iron ore, of which Rio Tinto is one of China’s largest suppliers. But Hu reportedly denied the bribes totaled $935,000, as prosecutors contend.
