As the nation’s largest private employer, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., is no stranger to employment-related class actions. As of March, for instance, the giant retailer was still awaiting a decision on class certification from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in what could potentially be the biggest gender discrimination case in U.S. history.

But lately, Wal-Mart’s employment docket appears to be dwindling. A June 2008 quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission listed more than 70 such class actions pending against the company. By last December, SEC filings show, that number was down to 13, though Wal-Mart isn’t required to list all cases to which it is a party.
