In 2003, a year after Jim Bender was hired as general counsel of The Williams Companies, Inc., the CEO suggested that he get to know the directors by taking one to breakfast before each board meeting.
“Initially, it made me a little nervous,” confesses Bender, sitting in an overstuffed chair in his large office with sweeping views of Tulsa 49 stories below. Even though he’d been GC at NRG Energy, Inc., before coming to Williams, he was still getting a handle on his new company’s sprawling business of developing, processing, selling, and trading natural gas.
