It’s an unusual networking group— and an exclusive one. Some 25 lawyers who served as a general counsel at a federal agency under President George W. Bush have continued to stay in touch. Most of them joined a law firm after leaving the government, but a few took in-house jobs. And since the end of the Bush administration, they’ve occasionally met for a “class reunion” in Washington, D.C.

Lily Claffee, a former general counsel at the U.S. Department of Commerce, was one of those who showed up for the latest gathering, held on June 7 in the “Cabinet Room” at the historic Old Ebbitt Grill. Claffee, now a partner at Jones Day, says she marvels at how much camaraderie and trust there is among the group, “simply by virtue of having worked for the same president. It is a rare thing in professional life, and in Washington, D.C., in general.”
