Ashurst structured finance and securities boss Erica Handling will leave behind a mixed legacy when she joins longstanding client Barclays Capital as general counsel for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa later this year.
Having launched the practice in 2005, Handling, a noted CDO specialist, has achieved considerable success in establishing one of the market’s leading teams. The group has grown considerably under her tenure, now comprising ten partners in London and more than 100 lawyers firmwide. However, Handling also will be remembered as the driving force behind a controversial U.S. acquisition that partners claim has failed to turn a profit since the new practice group launched in February 2009. (Handling did not respond to two requests for comment.)
