In order to become the new executive vice president and general counsel of Popular, Inc., which owns the largest bank in Puerto Rico, Ignacio Alvarez had to leave the San Juan law firm he helped found in 1992. But that wasn’t the biggest transformation he’s recently had to face.

“My wife passed away, and a lot changed in my life,” said Alvarez, who was a name partner at Pietrantoni Méndez & Alvarez. “I’m now a single parent with four children. I wanted more flexibility, and that wasn’t always possible, given the demands of working at a law firm.”
