Balk makes the jump to the thrill-seeking business from a less fun-filled industry: health care. Since 2007, he had served as senior vice president and general counsel of Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, the largest clinical diagnostics company in the world. He held the same position for a year at Dade Behring, Inc., before it was acquired by Siemens. Balk handled all global legal activities for both companies.

The 52-year-old’s prior GC positions were his first forays in-house. Beginning in 1984, he had worked as a corporate lawyer at Kirkland & Ellis, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions and securities law matters. Balk, who holds a J.D. and an MBA from the University of Chicago, was also a cofounder of Kirkland’s New York corporate and securities practices.
