Joshua Mintz wasn’t looking for a new job back in 1994 when the general counsel position at Chicago’s John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation came open. Mintz had been representing the foundation in some real estate matters at Sidley Austin. Although he confesses that he wasn’t entirely sure what the job would entail, he decided to apply. “This was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” says Mintz.

One of the things that attracted Mintz to the foundation was the idea of working for a single client. The foundation is best known for its $500,000 MacArthur fellowships, nicknamed “genius grants.” The grants provide five years of support to individuals who exhibit extraordinary creativity and future promise. “I view this as the best legal job in Chicago. I’d like to keep it a little bit of a secret,” he says.
