My in-house career started in 1990, when a recruiter called to ask if I was interested in becoming GC of General Electric Company’s plastics division. GE is based in Connecticut, and at the time, I was a partner in the Miami office of Baker & McKenzie. I thought seriously about the consequences of uprooting my young children. But I accepted the job.

At the age of 36, I thought I was prepared for this leadership role. I managed pretty well. I learned a lot from Ben Heineman, Jr., GE’s top general counsel, and built a terrific team of lawyers.
