Amusement might not be the first thing you think of when you think of lawyering, but Lance Balk’s career has taken him from law firm life to a nice balance of in-house work and the wonderful world of leisure activities. His first job out of the University of Chicago Law School was a Kirkland & Ellis, where he spent more than 20 years working on corporate and securities matters and helped open Kirkland’s New York office in 1990.

In 2006 Balk left the big-firm world and became general counsel for medical diagnostics company Dade Behring Holdings, Inc. In 2010 he became the new general counsel at Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, joining a group of former Dade Behring employees—including current Six Flags CEO Jim Reid-Anderson—in jumping to the amusement park company, a move that allows him to get in touch with his inner child.
