Michael Cheah says he’s no creative genius behind the video camera. But the general counsel of video-sharing Web site Vimeo has picked up a few tricks on the job: “I’ve spent quite some time on Vimeo Video School,” he says, referring to a regular series the site offers to help users enhance their shooting and editing skills. The “freemium” site—the first to offer HD playback for users—attracts a community of indie and aspiring filmmakers. It now boasts over 7 million registered users uploading more than 20,000 videos daily. “It’s easy to spend hours just clicking through the amazing videos our users have posted,” he says.
Cheah came to Vimeo’s parent, InterActiveCorp, in 2006 as a litigator for the New York–based Internet company, but has focused almost exclusively on Vimeo since 2009. Before that, he was an associate at Sullivan & Cromwell and the now-dissolved Heller Ehrman. When he’s not working or perfecting his shot, Cheah is studying for the U.S. citizenship exam: The Canadian native hopes to become a U.S. citizen soon.
