SAN JOSE — After giving plaintiffs another chance at class certification in their case against Google, Apple and other Silicon Valley giants, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh had tough questions for lawyers on both sides.

At a hearing Thursday, Koh grilled attorneys for close to four hours but did not indicate whether she would certify a class of former workers who accuse the companies of suppressing salaries with agreements not to recruit each other's employees.
