Note: This story has been updated with a statement from Jones's campaign.
Former GoDaddy general counsel Christine Jones is looking to go from .com to .gov—she’s announced that she’s running for governor of Arizona.
Jones, who stepped down last year from her post as executive vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary for domain-name registrar Go Daddy Operating Company, told the Arizona Capitol Times that she intends to file this month to formally enter the 2014 race on the Republican side. “I took a fair amount of time to carefully consider whether to do this. And having traveled the state and talked to people from all four of the corners, it’s clear to me that Arizona can use the type of leadership that I hope to offer,” she told the paper.
According to the Times story, Jones is entering a potentially crowded field: “Secretary of State Ken Bennett, state Treasurer Doug Ducey and Sen. Al Melvin have all [formed] exploratory committees for the governor’s race. Former Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman and former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas have filed as candidates, and Mesa Mayor Scott Smith is considering a run.” If she wins the party’s nomination, Jones would seek to replace outgoing Republican Governor Jan Brewer, who cannot run for another term due to state term limits. [UPDATE: Brewer may, in fact, try for another term.]
