When Matt Fawcett took over as general counsel of NetApp in 2010, his first hire was his department COO, Connie Brenton. He'd coveted having someone in this function in his previous GC stint at JDS Uniphase Corporation, but with a staff of 30, he didn't feel they were quite large enough to justify the investment. Now he knows what he was missing.
"We know we do a better job budgeting and forecasting and saving money," Fawcett says. Brenton has helped find ways to speed their business: Instead of waiting for ink signatures on contracts, they can now have five people in five different countries execute a binding agreement electronically in minutes. Other tools she's introduced have helped them build and track budgets and assess comparative costs, Fawcett adds, including outside counsel expenses.
