Welcome to another edition of our "Who Represents America's Biggest Companies" survey. It's a big endeavor, and we try to give you a good idea of which law firms are doing battle on behalf of big clients. The information itself is useful—you can alter your law firm shopping habits, or know who your competitor retains. Have an intellectual property matter? You probably are more than interested in who Google Inc. or Apple Inc., two of the scrappiest fighters out there, hire.

There's more to it, of course. Here in the media business, we talk about news hooks. A casual reader might not notice, but we do have reasons for going forward with stories when we do, apart from the simple fact that stuff happens. When we look at trends, for example, there's a triggering event that makes us say, 
"Let's go with it."
